The Tibetan Computer Company
The Tibetan Computer Company was started in the mid 1980's with the aim of creating high standard Tibetan software. Today it has a group of products which are constantly being enhanced. Here is a list of the main products
- Four Tibetan Fonts
The standard TibetanMachine which comes with all their software, the web version of this font (that's the one we use), and two fonts of very high quality, TibetanCalligraphic and TibetanClassic. TibetanMachineWeb is the only font that will work on Machintosh. - Tibetan!
This is a keyboard handler which comes in two versions, for MS Word and WordPerfect. It is available both for Windows and Machintosh. - TibetDoc
A complete stand alone word-processor that can handle both Tibetan and other fonts. It has its own file format, but can also save files in various formats, including RTF and HTML. E-mail, fax interface and Tibetan spelling checker are examples of many features which make this the best Tibetan word-processor around. The latest release of TibetDoc includes a pecha (traditional Tibetan text) maker that allows you to type in text in pecha layout, or convert any text to pecha layout with one button click! Another new feature is the ability to interact with any of the Padma Karpo Translation Committee's dictionaries (see below) by simply selecting a word or phrase in the text and have the program look it up in the dictionary. TibetDoc is Windows based, but Macintosh version is on the drawing table. - TibetD
This is a database tool for text archiving and dictionary creation. The reader version of this product is supplemented with dictionaries and texts published by PKTC.
Padma Karpo Translation Committee
The Padma Karpo Translation Committee is directed by Mr. Tony Duff, founder and owner of the Tibetan Computer Company. PKTC has published four dictionaries and a number of Tibetan Dharma texts on CDs. Here is a list of available dictionaries
- The Illuminator Tibetan-English Dictionary
I have been using the Illuminator for a few years now and it has become one of my most valued study tools. I'm able to translate much faster now than before, and at the same time I'm learning a lot from the detailed description for each entry. - Chandra Das Tibetan-English Dictionary
- Geshe Chodrak's Tibetan-Tibetan Dictionary
- Mahavyupatti Sanskrit-Tibetan Dictionary
You can read a detailed description of these dictionaries here , and download a full evaluation version here.
Other Software
- Tibetan Computer Resource Center
TCRC in Dharamsala has made two fonts and a keyboard handler which makes it possible to type Tibetan in most Windows applications. I use it with Microsoft Word and it works reasonably well. This is free for anyone to download, so check it out. - The Tibetan Language Kit
Macintosh users can download font and keyboard handler from this site. It's free. - Yamada Language Center
This site has fonts for both Windows and Macintosh. This is free and can be downloaded from their site. - Nirtha International
They have developed fonts and MS-Word macros which you can buy on their site. - Tsampa.org
This is the homepage of Kristoffer Lindqvist. He has created Tibetan fonts, and software to study Tibetan. The prototype for his Windows based study program looks very promising, and we hope he will continue developing it.
